Suffolk Retail Crime Forum: A Collaborative Effort to Tackle Retail Crime

In late 2024, we were proud to host the Suffolk Retail Crime Forum in partnership with Suffolk Constabulary at Ipswich Town Football Club. This event marked an important milestone in our commitment to supporting our home county in the UK and working collaboratively to enhance safety and tackle retail crime across Suffolk. The forum brought together a range of stakeholders, including members of Suffolk Constabulary, retail security and management staff, and other key figures dedicated to creating safer communities.

The focus of the event was the Suffolk Retail Crime Action Plan, an initiative aimed at addressing the growing challenges faced by retailers in the region. As crime continues to impact businesses and communities, the need for collective action and coordinated efforts between law enforcement, retailers, and local authorities has never been more pressing.

The forum provided an opportunity for leaders to present their vision for tackling retail crime and to engage in meaningful discussions on the steps needed to drive change. Attendees were able to hear from a range of experts, including Rachel Kearton, Chief Constable for Suffolk, Tim Passmore, Police and Crime Commissioner for Suffolk, Superintendent Andy Martin, Area Commander for South Suffolk, and Elliot Blenkhorn, Sales Director at ShopSafe. Each speaker shared their insights and outlined the importance of collaboration in creating a safer environment for retailers, their staff, and the local community.

Key Presentations and Insights

Rachel Kearton, Chief Constable for Suffolk, opened the event by stressing the importance of partnership working in combatting retail crime. She highlighted how local police forces, working in tandem with retailers and stakeholders, could improve intelligence-sharing and enhance prevention strategies. Her presentation focused on the role of law enforcement in reducing crime, building public confidence, and ensuring that retail environments are safe and secure for both employees and customers.

Tim Passmore, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Suffolk, reinforced the significance of tackling retail crime as part of a broader strategy to reduce all forms of crime in the county. He discussed how initiatives like the Suffolk Retail Crime Action Plan are vital for providing a coordinated, region-wide response to the issue. Tim's talk also emphasized the importance of investment in local policing resources, ensuring that the police have the tools they need to combat crime effectively.

Superintendent Andy Martin, Area Commander for South Suffolk, launched the Retail Crime Action Plan for Suffolk. He outlined the operational aspects of the plan, discussing the proactive approach being adopted by Suffolk Constabulary. This includes the use of technology, enhanced surveillance, and close collaboration with retailers to improve intelligence and response times. His presentation emphasized the crucial role of data-driven strategies in strengthening crime prevention efforts and supporting local businesses.

Finally, Elliot Blenkhorn, Sales Director at ShopSafe, discussed the role of technology in supporting retail crime prevention. He explained how ShopSafe’s integrated solutions, including smart radios, body-worn cameras, and the Alert platform, are helping retailers gather valuable data, monitor incidents in real time, and share intelligence with law enforcement. Elliot also spoke about ShopSafe’s commitment to supporting Suffolk businesses by providing them with the tools needed to reduce theft and antisocial behaviour.

A Unified Approach to Retail Crime

The forum underscored the importance of a unified approach in tackling retail crime. It was clear from the discussions that no single organization or sector could address these challenges alone. The collaboration between Suffolk Constabulary, retail businesses, and technology providers like ShopSafe is essential for driving meaningful change and creating a safer retail environment for all.

By bringing together the right mix of law enforcement, retail leaders, and technology providers, the forum highlighted the power of partnership working. It’s through these collaborations that we can continue to make progress in reducing retail crime, improving community safety, and supporting the growth of local businesses.

Supporting Our Local Community

We were especially proud to be part of this forum, supporting our home county in Suffolk and contributing to the ongoing efforts to make it a safer place for residents, retailers, and visitors. At ShopSafe, we are committed to helping create safer communities, and this event reinforced our dedication to providing innovative solutions that empower retailers to protect their assets and staff.

The discussions held at Ipswich Town Football Club will serve as a foundation for continued collaboration and action. As we move forward, we look forward to working alongside Suffolk Constabulary and other stakeholders to ensure that Suffolk remains a safe, thriving environment for businesses and communities.
